In most empirical studies of the demand for cigarettes, the authors posit, ad hoc, the demand equation as their statement of hypothesis. The purpose of this paper is to provide deductive support, through the analytical framework of utility maximization, to the statement of hypothesis that the information disseminating health hazards of smoking reduces the consumption of cigarettes, hence, abating both personal and social costs of smoking in the form of medical expenses, and incomes forgone caused by smoking-related sicknesses and deaths.
