• Students writing a traditional college research paper must state their point of view about a subject they have investigated and support their views through reference to published sources. This article outlines aspects of a course for helping Japanese students write their first English research paper. Four factors essential to the success of such a course are described, and three degrees of instructor control/student autonomy are indicated.
