A thing which can be recognized visually as a concrete object in Japanese is often understood in English as an abstract one which does not have a specific form-for example "tempura." Such a thing is grammatically categorized as a kind of uncountable noun under the concept of number. This is a "material noun." In the course of this categorization, two cognitive processes, whose directions are opposite, exist: 1) an individual thing characterized by a countable forms the collectivity, which is abstracted; 2) an abstract thing characterized by an uncountable turns countable in a process of materialization. In these cognitive processes, the question of how a speaker or a writer recognizes a thing has a great influence on the countability of the thing.
