What is the crucial difference between Hawtrey and Keynes as to whether England should restore the gold standard or not? The clue is that, whereas the former was optimistic about the monetary policies in the US, the latter was pessimistic about that. This is because Keynes was much more nationalistic, in a sense. Nevertheless, except for this point, they shared the new economic thought, that is, managed currencies, inherent in the 1920s.
