In this paper I will analyze two types of English pronouns : demonstrative pronouns and personal pronouns. The demonstrative pronouns this (these) and that (those) in English are systematized on the two-dimensional sense of distance, that is, "near / remote", while the Japanese kore, sore, are, are three-dimensional in their sense of distance "near / middle / remote". Personal pronouns in English, on the other hand, are established by the different system from demonstrative ones. They refer to the things once nominalized by way of the process "referent⟶reference (or thought) ⟶symbol", and they must agree with their antecedents grammatically in person, number and gender. In addition, it and they function as "a pronoun for (demonstrative) pronoun". We have to pay special attention to some mistakes Japanese students often make. They automatically translate it in English into sore with the Japanese sense of distance and so do that into Japanese are or ano in the same way. In learning a system of English pronouns, we have to realize the point of information that the native speakers put in the process of discourse. One does not always see the perfect correspondence of the referent system between Japanese and English.
