Acceleration of Lipid Peroxidation and Induction of Heat Shock Protein-like Polypeptide in Fetal Rat Brains Exposed to Ochratoxin A

Ochratoxin A (OA; 3 mg/kg), a mycotoxin and a potent teratogen, was injected intraperitoneally to pregnant mice on day 11 of gestation (day 1 = plug day). OA treatment produced intrauterine growth retardation as well as microencephaly. The level of lipid peroxide in fetal brains was increased markedly from the 2rd to 4th day after injection. Significant increments of superoxide dismutase activity were seen on the 1st and 2nd days after treatment. An acidic heat shock protein (hsp)-like polypeptide with a molecular weight of approximately 30 kD was induced in fetal brains at 36 hours after injection. These results suggest that hsp-like polypeptide may be induced by acceleration of free radical formation by the treatment with OA, indicative of response to stress such as cellular death in the developing brain.
