The purpose of this study is to examine requests for clarification in the Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI) used by Koreans who are learning Japanese. The OPIs of Korean learners of Japanese from novice to superior level were analyzed in this paper focusing on the frequency and types of requests for clarification (RCs). There were clear differences in the use of RCs among the levels of learners. Novice learners used the most RCs, while superior learners used the fewest. With regard to the types of RCs, the results are as follows: 1. The echo-type RCs were the most frequent type used at the novice level and it was used as an effective strategy when learners did not understand what testers said. 2. The paraphrase-type RCs were used more frequent than the echo-type RCs at the intermediate level. 3. The advanced learners used both the echo-type and the paraphrase-type RCs to check their understanding of tester's utterance. 4. There were few RCs at the superior level. The superior learners used the paraphrase-type RCs in order to clarify what testers intended to ask and also used the echo-type RCs as backchannels in conversation.
