This article presents the results of a survey done of Tokai high school English teachers to find out how English writing is currently being taught within the Tokai Educational System. Questions were asked regarding the types of English writing being done by high school students, the types of writing instruction being offered and the various teaching methods being used. The teachers' responses seem to indicate that there is a greater emphasis being placed on sentence-level translation from Japanese into English in writing, rather than on more communicative English writing. Some of the unique problems and concerns expressed by high school English teachers who teach writing are also discussed. Several practical suggestions are given to assist teachers in beginning to make needed improvements in English writing instructions.
