The possibility of drilling in dental hard tissues was investigated by using Erbium : YAG (Er : YAG) laser, and the effect was compared with that of some other lasers. Round hole was successfully formed in dental enamel and dentin. The depth and the diameter of the hole changed depending upon the magnitude of output energy, and it was possible to control the depth and the diameter of it. The beam of Er : YAG laser is absorbed well into dental enamel. These results suggested that Er : YAG laser has a possibility to make favorable drilling in dental hard tissues.
