Studies on contemporary pottery-making and pottery-making villages have long history in the Philippines and neighboring islands since the research in Taiwan by Ryuzou Torii in 1897. Early studies from 1950's to 1970's are mainly focused on the technology of pottery-making. However, the main stream of studies of the pottery are moving toward the studies on the pottery-using since 1980's. Yet, even in the former technological study, there are several unsolved ploblems which should be discussed. One of these problems is the number of the tools for pottery-making owned by a potter or a family of a potter. Many researchers reported the kind of tools for pottery-making. However, the number of tools for pottery-making has been hardly reported in former studies. The number of tools should not been forgotten in addition to the kind of tools to clarify the development of pottery-making. According to my research, Mr. and Mrs. Saras in Quinagabian have the following number of tools for pottery-making : 1 board for pottery-making, 1 mortar used as a table for a water jar-making, 8 stands reused rim part of broken pottery for pottery-making, 5 paddles, 6 anvils, 4 bamboo sticks, 2 water containers, 1 mold for stove-making. Another problem is the relationship of the pottery-making villages in the same area. I have discovered that each village has its own main product to avoid the competition with other villages. In this manner, each pottery making village tries to maintain its own share thinking of coexistance. For this procedure, I counted the number of pottery after the firing in Quinagabian. And it was compared with the number of the pottery in Atulu. As a result, water jars and cooking pots are mainly produced in Quinagabian. On the other hand, flower pots are mainly produced in Atulu. Interestingly the areas for the sale of the pottery are also different. The pottery made in Quinagabian are widely distributed throughout Cagayan, Isabela and other provinces. On the other hand, the pottery made in Atulu are distributed only in Cagayan province. As for the study of the sale of the pottery, further studies are should be needed.
