Two types of dual-spiral elements characterised by their simple feed are studied; one is a bidirectional radiation type (Bi-DSS) and the other is a unidirectional type (Uni-DSS). A theory dealing with the electromagnetic coupling between arbitrarily curved slots and wires is applied to the analysis of the Bi-DSS. It is found that, when the slot arm length is properly chosen, a travelling wave magnetic current distribution is established over the slot arm, leading to the radiation of a circularly polarised wave. The Bi-DSS radiation mechanism lies at the base of the design for the triplate Uni-DSS. Formation of a circularly polarised, unidirectional beam is experimentally realised. The impedance matching between the Uni-DSS and the transmission line is achieved using a quarter-wave transformer. Based on the radiation characteristics of the single Uni-DSS, a 4×8 Uni-DSS array is constructed. A power gain of 23 dB corresponding to an aperture efficiency of 60% is attained over the frequency range of 11.6GHz to 12.0GHz.
