A 13-year-old male child with congenital clubfoot who, after some treatment for it, had now a residual deformity in the right foot was observed electromyographically in order to ascertain the effect of an insole on standing and walking. To check the muscle activities of the lower extremities, the patient was given two tasks; first, standing and walking while wearing on shoes without an insole, secondly, standing and walking while wearing on the right-foot a shoe with a DSIS type pad. Insole adaptation was found to be effective in decreasing high amplitude interference waves and abnormal potentials of surface EMG, which were suspected of overloading both the triceps surae muscle and the anterior tibial muscle. Also insole adaptation was found to improve the gait pattern.
