The model for the famous painting called the Mona Lisa drawn by the Italian Artist, Leonardo da Vinci, was thought to be a lady named Mona Lisa, who was the wife of Francesca del Giocondo of Florence, and this painting has been called La Gioconda or the Mona Lisa. Today, however, there are many theories about the model for the Mona Lisa, but the tendency is to think that Leonardo might not have drawn a real person but rather his image of an ideal woman. The author is of the opinion that Leonardo might have drawn a real woman. The reason is that recently the author noticed that Leonardo drew a very small wart-like exanthema on the face of the Mona Lisa. He drew it between the left side of the nasion and the inner angle of the left eye. This fact can be considered as evidence that Leonardo did not draw an ideal woman, but rather a real person. Leonardo met a woman called Caterina in Milan in 1493,who it is thought was regarded as Leonardo's mother. In those days, when Leonardo was 41 or 42 years old and his mother was 63 or 64 years old, he might have used his mother as the model for the Mona Lisa. Therefore it could be expected that the painting would show an older woman. However, it would have been easy for Leonardo to draw his old mother as a younger and more beautiful woman. Thus, the Mona Lisa's smile may be his mother's smile.
