Vita Sackville-West, a friend of Virginia Woolf, Iived in Knole, Kent since her girlhood. Knole was bestowed on her ancestor, Thomas Sackville, by Queen Elizabeth I. Thomas was the Queen's cousin. Knole is one of the very old and largest country houses in England. Vita cultivated her love for the old country houses and published her work The English Country Houses. She wrote in it that the English country houses have grown as the landmarks peculiar to the past history for the people who had lived there. They are one with nature in peaceful harmony, as well. The history of English country houses was ultimately related to the Norman Conquest of England. The Normans themselves built many castles in their march to protect themselves against the rebellious Anglo-Saxon subjects. Before the Norman Conquest the Anglo-Saxons had no castles nor knew anything about castles. The Normans very effectively used castles to conquer the whole land with a small army, Wars came to an end in England in the late fourteenth century. The English lords built the manor houses that were called country houses later. They moved into their new houses with their family for a comfortable mode of life. Gardens developed around their country houses for the pleasant and comfortable life of the English high society. In my present study, the significance of the Norman Conquest is mainly discussed regarding how it had the deep as well as wide impact on the history and culture of Britain.
