Katherine Mansfield's cousin, Elizabeth von Arnim was a well-known author of twenty-one popular works of fiction, including Elizabeth and Her German Garden, which was a bestseller. Although after her death her books were forgotten and ignored for a long time, today's literary feminist movement has begun to rediscover them. In this paper, I would like to reassess Elizabeth both as an innovator of feminist fiction and as a role-model for Katherine Mansfield who was twenty-two years her junior. First, I will make an inquiry into Elizabeth's life and works. She led an adventurous life and her works conveyed some strong feminist ideas. Second, I will discuss the relationship between Elizabeth and Katherine. Elizabeth, who had played a role-model for young Katherine, turned out to be her admirer. In a sense she supported and 'hatched' Katherine Mansfield. Third, I would like to make a comparison between them, clarifying their characteristics; that is Elizabeth as 'a brilliant amateur, ' and Katherine as 'a born professional'.
