The crystal structure of cryolite, Na_3AlF_6,is characterized by a framework of distorted AlF_6 octahedra, which lie at the corners and face-centers of a pseudocubic lattice. The angle of rotation of the octahedron has been estimated by comparing the coordinates of F ions constituting the octahedron, with those calculated by assuming an undistorted octahedron, which is rotated around the [111] axis by some presumed angle. It has been found that the AlF_6 octahedra at the corners of the pseudocubic cell are rotated around the [111] axis by about π/7 rad, and that those at the face centered positions of the unit cell are rotated around the [1^^-1^^-1] axis by about -π/7 rad from the highest-symmetry orientation.
