• The body size, gonosomatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI), and stomach content weights (SCW) were examined on saffron cod Eleginus glacilis (Family Gadidae) collected under sea ice along the coast of Notsuke Peninsula, northeastern Hokkaido, in January of 1992 and 1993. The catch of saffron cod in this region recorded historically highest in 1992 with 13,285 mt, but declined to 241 mt in 1993. The mean fork lengths of fish were 30-31 cm in 1993,2-3 cm larger than those in 1992. The gonad weights ranged between 2-140 g in female and 1-60 g in male, but majority of gonad (83-96%) were below 10 g, indicating most of fish were spent stage. The mean stomach contents were 1.8-4.0 % of net body weight. The empty stomachs were only 6.7% in 1992,but exceeded 25% in 1993,Most notably, the stomachs were filled with bottom sands (up to 4.6 % of body weight) and saffron cod eggs (up to 5,527 eggs). The HSI and SCI suggest that spent saffron cod become active in feeding soon after spawning, even in cold water condition.
