It is needed to determine the representative wave of random waves to use for design of coastal structures. The significant wave height and the significant wave period are often used as characteristics of the representative wave. Concerning wave direction, Longuet-Higgins (1956) proposed mean wave direction and principal wave direction defined by spectral moments. Goda (1981) proposed a estimation method of these representative wave directions from the covariance of observed water displacements and fluid velocity, etc. In their method, the random waves are represented by Fourier series. However, the stochastic characteristics of amplitudes are not aciculate to express the random waves. In the present paper, the random waves are expressed by the spectral representation. Then the mean wave direction and the principal wave direction are redefined by use of this representation. And the estimation method of these representative wave directions is formulated by use of the spectral representation.
