The distribution, age and size compositions, and feeding condition of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta Walbaum) were investigated in the northern Bering Sea between 60°N and 62°N, near St. Lawrence Island. The fish were captured with surface gilinets on July 23-27,1986. The abundance in catch per unit tan was between 0.9 and 2.7. The age-3 fish were dominant with 65-89 % of the total fish, followed by age 4-fish. The mean size of age-3 fish was 58-63 cm in fork length and 2,400-3,600 g in body weight. The gonad weight measured 8-375 g in female and 1-310 g in male. While immature fish occurred abundantly in the southern water, the mature fish prevailed in the northern water or near the Alaskan coast. The chum salmon fed mainly on amphipod Parathemisto libellula and pteropod Clione limacina in the offshore region. In the coastal region, they fed on variety of foods, including larval gadid, sandlance and sculpin. The feeding indices as percentage prey weight to body weight of fish were generally high, showing good feeding conditions of chum salmon.
