It is generally agreed by professionals that everyone learns their first language with a fair degree of success, the reason being that everyone is born with the ability to learn a language and has to use it in order to survive. It has also been viewed that some people are more successful than others at learning a second language. This paper investigates the relationships of motivation and attitudes influencing Second Language Oral Acquisition, and reports the results of a case study of evening class and daytime university students. After six months of intensive language study, the night students had all scored substantially higher on the final tests than the day students. The survey results indicated that motivation and attitude are critical factors for learning a second language. The results of this study make useful recommendations for creating an environment that is productive for student and teacher alike.
