This paper critically examines the work of William B. Gudykunst to clarify how he constructs an argument for the study of how 'national sociocultural systems' impact upon human communication. His argument can be seen as requiring adherence to various assumptions, here termed the cognitive, continuity, boundary, representativeness, and operationalization assumptions. The objectivist approach to the communication and culture connection is found to be wanting in various ways.
