This special issue is the result of a research project undertaken by the Study Group on Jawi Documents in Southeast Asia. The term Jawi is defined as a system of writing using Arabic letters in Malay and other Austronesian languages in Southeast Asia, including various local languages in Indonesia and the Southern Philippines, and the Chain language. This project is aimed at collecting information concerning Jawi documents in various parts of Southeast Asia, and comparing them on a region-wide basis. The activities in this project include examining the history and present situation concerning the study of Jawi documents in Southeast Asia and the West, identifying problems in utilizing the Jawi documents as source material in Southeast Asian studies, and considering ways of overcoming such problems. Jawi materials have scarcely been used by Japanese scholars. It is, however, necessary to use not only documents written in Roman letters but also those written in Jawi as source material in order to study in depth various aspects of Southeast Asia. By studying and utilizing Jawi materials in a more positive manner, we will be able to examine a network of people crossing the boundaries of localized communities or states, and identify the connections between Southeast Asia and other regions, such as the Middle-East and South Asia.
