In this paper I discuss one of many linguistic problems in the history of Arabic and/or Hebrew grammarians and grammars. Arabic verbs are classified in general into "I-X (orXV)" types, and "I" is sometimes described as "Fundamental" while the other types are as "Derivatives". On the other hand, Hebrew verbs are formulated as QAL/NIPH^CAL/PI^CEL/PU^CAL/HIPH^CIL/HOPH^CAL/HITHPA^CEL. QAL means "light". and the others were called, according to W.Bacher, as "heavy" by Dunash ben Labrat, the 10th century Hebrew grammarian. The Arabic method of classification might be a result of influence from the Greek and Latin grammatical thinking, and this author is inclined to think that the origin of the "light and heavy" classification of Hebrew verbs shall be sought in the field of older Semitic grammatical tradition.
