The question of international labour migration in the Middle East has aroused a great interest among policy-makers, business worlds and academic circles, since the mid-1970's, in the Middle East as well as at the outside of it. One of the important aspects of the question will be an estimation of the duration of residency or period of stay of migrant labourers, and whether they can return home within 5 years or not, with a sufficient sum of savings or remittance. If we define the scope of the question within that of migrant labourers in the 6 Arab countries of the Gulf area (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, and Oman), we have not yet enough reliable information to conduct an overall survey on the duration of residency in this area. In the case of Kuwait, however, we are supplied much more sufficient information about the subject than in the cases of the other countries. We can safely conclude that nearly a half of the migrant labourers in Kuwait in 1980 stay for less than 5 years, and number of those who stay for more than 5 years, or 10 years and more has been increasing at a relatively higth rate in the 1980's, and also a majority of migrant labourers are accompanied by their families in the 1980's.
