During the Pacific War, the Japanese Army and Navy occupied Indonesia for three and half years placing her under a Military Administration. Though the dominant religion of Indonesia is Islam, there were Indonesian Christians living in the so-called "Out Land" as a majority group as a result of the Dutch Colonialism. There were established ethnic rural churches. Basically not only the Japanese military establishment but the Japanese in general considered Christianity as a hostile religion, while in their mind Shintoism was not taken as a religion. Upon the commencement of the Military Administration in Indonesia, the Japanese Navy Ministry decided to send Japanese Protestant pastors and Catholic priests for the purpose of "pacification work" in areas where the Navy had the task of administration, in Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Ambon, and Nusa Tenggara. The Army controlled Sumatra and Java, where no pastors or priests were assigned. This article intends to discuss and to seek the historical meaning of the Church History of Indonesia. Indonesian Churches were already seeking their independence from mission societies of Holland and Europe before the Japanese occupation, but under the control of Japanese they were unable to promote that goal. This article relies on materials from Indonesian and other archives to seek the meaning and inference of the Japanese Military Administration and Japanese pastors and priests and their work in the context of on-going Indonesian Church History. It is noted that during the war in Japan, the Japanese Government marked churches in Japan as institutions of an enemy religion. Thus the Government passed the "Religious Bodies Law" to control not only Christian churches but every religion. Thus Japanese Christians were forced into a "supportive" role in the war.
