Developing student readiness for learning languages is often thought of as an area of concern mostly for the teacher in the classroom, yet all aspects of the language program affect its success. In Part I, the characteristics and language strategies of second language learners are described with the view that allowing students to be autonomous learners will promote their readiness. Part II suggests general guidelines in how the instructional program can complement, rather than discourage student readiness for learning languages.
