The study reported was designed to clarify the effect of the intake of commercial butter (BUG), lard (LAG), soybean oil (SOG) and diacylglycerol oil (DGG) on lipid metabolism in growing rats. Male Sprague-Dawry rats (5 weeks old) were divided into four groups (5 rats per group), and given a 15% lipid (0.5% cholesterol) diet for 4 weeks. Apparent digestibility of lipids in BUG, LAG, DGG and SOG were 98.6%, 98.5%, 98.4%,and 98.4%, respectively. Liver weights in LAG (22.Og) and DGG (20.7g) were significantly more than that in BUG (18.3g), and liver weight in LAG was significantly more than that in SOG (19.6g). Relative liver weights in each group were DGG 8.20%, LAG 7.89%, SOG 7.23% and BUG 6.52%, respectively, and there was significant difference among four groups. Hepatic lipid content in LAG (8.35g), DGG (8.12g) and SOG (7.50g) were significantly more than that in BUG (5.47g). In other organs, heart weight in BUG (0.92g) was significantly more than that in SOG (0.82g). Spleen weight in BUG (0.72g) and LAG (0.72g) were significantly more than that in SOG (0.61g), and relative spleen weight in LAG (0.26%) was significantly more than that in SOG (0.23%). No significant differences were reported in any of three fat pads (mesenteric, epididymal, and perirenal adipose tissues) weight. Serum total cholesterol concentrations in BUG (166mg/dl) and LAG (132 mg/dl) were significantly higher than those in SOG (77mg/dl) and DGG (76 mg/dl). Serum HDL-cholesterol concentration in DGG (41mg/dl) was significantly higher than that in BUG (34mg/dl); These data indicate that in growing rats, reducing effects of diacylglyserol oil on body fat accumulation and serum triacylglyserol reported in men and adult mice were not seen.
