• This is the first in a series of papers on self-expression and its application within society at large, which is an area of study which has received some attention in Japan of late. I intend to discuss expression in the theatre as well as physical expression, which are my own areas of specialism. In this first paper I will consider how drama should be taught to children, and how it should be taught to students who in turn will become teachers of children, bearing in mind the difference between drama in education, and the theatre in education. Also, I will touch on the close relationship, in terms of role and characteristics between a teacher of drama and the leader of a drama workshop. In particular, I will consider the characteristics of leadership that a drama teacher and workshop leader should possess.
