Dante Gabriel Rossetti has left two different versions of 'Sonnets for Pictures': six sonnets published in the Pre-Raphaelite literary magazine, The Germ, in 1850 and sixteen in his first collection of Poems (1870). The main differences between the two texts are: 1) the inclusion of sonnets on the pictures by Leonardo da Vinci and Rossetti's disciple, Edward Burne-Jones, instead of sonnets for two pictures by Memling; 2) the addition of sonnets for Rossetti's own paintings and drawings; 3) significant changes in titles for sonnets on Ingres's and Mantegna's pictures. These changes signal that Rossetti was fully aware of his own development towards potentially fin-de-siecle aesthetics, which was to be formulated by Walter Pater in 'The School of Giorgione,' a text deeply influenced by Rossetti's ekphrastic poetry. Two of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's ekphrastic 'Sonnets for Pictures,' i. e. 'For "Ruggiero and Angelica" by Ingres' and 'For an Allegorical Dance of Women by Mantegna,' are analysed, set against the background of these historical and cultural contexts.
