Ontogeny of the cardiocytes and their immunoreactive atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) was studied in Bufo japonicus formosus, Xenopus laevis and Trionyx sinensis japonicus at light- and electronmicroscopic levels, by use of the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase method and the protein A-gold technique. In both atrial and ventricular cardiocytes of all these three species, the secretory granules showing ANP immunoreactivity emerged first at the time when their circulatory system became functional. The pattern of the increasein number of the secretory granules during embryonic development varied among the three species. Biological meaning of the difference was discussed in relation to their specific life style.
