Indonesian economy under the Suharto regime achieved a miraculous economic growth, which made some people happy. The festival now is over. The 32-year-long Suharto empire collapsed from within in May 1998. The regime was characterized by the development dictatorship and the military dictatorship. The most serious negative legacy of the Suhart government is the KKN, which now harasses the majority of Indonesian people. Some call for the abolition of the KKN and an establishment of democratic civil society, but it will not come soon. Decades of united efforts are needed. The question is if such united efforts are feasible in the country of such diversity. Globalization demands Indonesia to be more serious in domestic reform, as asked by the IMF. An establishment of sound economic system is also called for. Thousands of problems remain to be solved. No optimism is guaranteed. Confusion stays on.小松憲治先生退官記念号Collected Papers on the Occasion of the Retirement of Professor Kenji Komatsu
