• In the first of a series of essays which discuss the modern refinements of some basic macroeconomic ideas introduced by Keynes in "The General Theory", I focus on the concept of effective demand and compare Keynes's original definition, in the light of his manuscript written in early 1930's, with its contemporary formalisations in terms of noncooperative game theory. This comparison makes it clear that the concept of effective demand is more exactly understood in the context of multiple equilibria under imperfect competition than in the context of perfect competition, and that the concept is refined independently of the existence of uncertainty.
