There are three methods approaches on the studies of the imperfection of quartz crystal : (1) Direct observation by the naked eye by means of microscope or X-ray Tophograph. (2) Opical absorption spectrum. (3) Acoustic absorption spectrum. The present state of these approaches is presented in terms of the above-titled thesis. Synthetic quartz crystal has been approached in HF with reference to the above-mentioned (1), and etch tubes have been found to exist. The result of King's works on the natural and synthetic quartz has been introduced as follows. Certain imperfections in alpha-quartz are found to cause anelastic absorption at low temperature in crystal resonators. For a shear wave of 5Mc, absorption peaks are observed at 20°K and 50°K in unirradiated samples; X-irradiation effect, on the other hand, has caused a new absorption peak to appear at 100°K. The author has introduced here the method of the study of imperfection in quartz by the mutual interaction of stress wave and lattice vibration.
