An indicator diagram is very effective in analyzing combustion states of internal combustion engines. The indicated mean effective gas pressure and the indicated power are obtained by an analysis of the indicator diagram too. There are two kinds of indicator diagrams. One is the P⊖ diagram and ther other is PV diagram. The former shows the pressure change in a cylinder caused by the crank angle, and the latter shows that by the stroke volume. When the oscilloscope is used in the P⊖ diagram measurement of four-stroke cycle engine, it is very convenient for analysis that each stroke of compression, expansion, exhaust, and suction is shown as large as possible. It is performed by using the external horizontal sweep signal derived from the crank angle signal. In case of the PV diagram, the stroke volume signal was generated from the mechanical device in the past. When the wave generator consists of the digital ICs, it's signal can be generated accurately with a negligible small amount of engine power. The circuit of the indicator diagram measuring device that is newly made consists of the 12 bit IC DA converter, TTL ICs and MOS ICs etc. The construction and function of this indicator diagram measuring device that is able to measure the PV diagram over the engine speed range of about 5500 rpm and the P⊖ diagram are explained, and also the P⊖ diagram and PV diagram obtained by this device are shown.
