In the present work, a new method is proposed to measure the displacements in a body using moire and photo-interference methods. This method is applied to three dimensional crack problems to obtain the state of the deformation near the crack front. In the case of a prismatic plate with edge cracks, firstly, correction of the stress intensity factor is obtained by the determined stress intensity factor from the displacement perpendicular to crack surface at the crack tip in a thin plate. Secondly, the distribution of the displacement u_z in the direction of the plate thickness is measured by using the photo-interference method. The region in which the displacement u_z is zero corresponds to the plane strain region, and the region where u_z is not zero corresponds to the plane stress and transient region. Thirdly, the displacement u_y which is vertical to the crack front is measured by using the moire method and the range which has γ^<-1/2> singularity is determined. Fourthly, the displacement u_x which is vertical to the crack plane including the crack front is measured by the photo-interference method. In this way, the effects of the plate thickness on the singularity of the crack tips are discussed.
