Mr. President, Mr. Chairman, distinguished guests and colleagues, and ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Kobe Symposium on "Agriculture, Food and Environment in Asia : Towards the 21st Century". It is my great pleasure to address, on behalf of the Faculty of Agriculture, this distinguished gathering that is planned for commemorating the 90th anniversary of Kobe University. We live in the final moment of the 20th century. We all aware that we face a very difficult era in the human history. The biggest concern is "How we can feed us and our children in the next century?" Twelve distinguished scientists from Asian countries, Australia, and Kobe University gathered together to exchange information and find solutions with all participants in this Symposium. The Symposium will highlight the important issues related to agricultural production, environmental conservation, and socio-economic aspects of food supply system. Our Faculty of Agriculture and the associated Graduate School have been accepting many students from Asian countries. This undoubtedly has provided young Asian students with invaluable opportunities to enrich their own lives and to help make themselves expertises in various Agricultural sectors. Our staffs have also been deeply involved in international activities, frequently visiting almost all countries in this area to exchange information and promote collaborative research. To guarantee enough and nutritious food and healthy life to our children in the next century, we must strengthen and expand our research collaboration. Collaborations that have been maintained more or less at an individual-scientist basis must now be organized into a more effective Research Network in this region of the world. In this context, we wish to play an important role, by promoting a better understanding of our problems based on the common incentives. The Symposium will hopefully give us fruits and serve as the first step toward the 21st century.
