The aim of this paper is to explore a new phase of Tomitaro Makino, who was one of world-famous botanists, as an 'Eigaku-sha' mainly through analyzing his large collection of English-Japanese dictionaries in the Makino library, which is attached to the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden. Why did Tomitaro collect so many dictionaries? How did he use them in his career as a botanist? To answer those questions, the paper first proceeds by reflecting upon his younger days, particularly those days when he spent at a local school 'Meikoh-kan' in 'Sakawa-mura' ; second by carrying out a bibliographical analysis of his dictionaries, some of which are rare and invaluable ones with historical value among the'Nihon-Eigaku-shi' circle; third by tracing out his writings to investigate how he used them in his long scholarly career. One of the most important findings is that Tomitaro used those dictionaries not only as references in learning the English language but also, more importantly, as resources in refining' Yaku-go' (translations) for English vocabulary. Some pieces of his writings are quoted to show that he often pointed out inappropriateness of translations in English-Japanese dictionaries.
