The purpose of this study was to investigate how quality of a context of an aversive emotion influences responses related to coping of the emotion. In this study, we are interested in how quality of Japanese culture shapes coping styles to aversive emotions in addition to how quality of a context influences emotional responses related to coping. That is, importance of the situation, self-efficacy appraisal, expectation to the effectiveness of the chosen coping style besides the choice of his/her likely coping strategy were explored in the laboratory experiment using Japanese university student subjects. 89 male and 58 female undergraduate students (mean age = 19.20 years) from the Yamagata University, Japan participated in this study. All participants were those who had Japanese citizenship with native language of Japanese. The participants chose externalizing strategies most in anger-induced state where they were hurt directly. The results indicated that coping strategies for anger were influenced more by the induced context than those for anxiety. In addition, they perceived themselves more competent when they perceived the strategies they chose more effective. The results discussed in the light of the nature of induction process of the stimulus emotion and character of behavioral patterns in some aversive emotion-elicited states among Japanese younger people.
