This paper examines the nature of honorifics by comparing the verbally expressed sentences with the so-called shinwa-bun, or mentally expressed but not verbally articulated sentences. The data are taken from Otogizoshi. In general, honorific expressions tend to be used in conversations just because of the presence of the listener, and shinwa-bun does not have this tendency because of the absence of him. In Otogizoshi, however, there are many honorific expressions even in shinwa-bun. This seems to be the result of the act of storytelling, where the teller was always aware of the listener's presence.
