Since Becker(1968) economists have studied criminal behavior and punishment, especially on deterrent effect to generate a large literature. On the problem of capital punishment, deterrent effect has been a main subject since Ehrich(1975). Deterrent effect of capital punishment is certainly an important issue, but we shouldnot ignore other aspects of the problem, such as respect for life, miscarriages of justice, discrimination and retribution. This article discusses many aspects of capital punishment basedon economic analysis of rational behavior. Although the author considers that capital punishment should be abolished, the main purpose of this paper is to show an analytical framework.
