Sakuradoki Zenino Yononaka, the Kabuki version of The Merchant of Venice, was performed in 1885 in the Yebis Theatre in Osaka. This was the first performance of Shakespeare on a Japanese stage. This performance is based on the novel written by Udagawa Bunkai under the same title. At that time, only twenty years after the Meiji Restoration, Kabuki was the only theatrical means that Japanese had. They had no choice but to perform the comedy in the Kabuki style. They transformed The Merchant of Venice into Kabuki by borrowing the major elements: such as the flesh-bond story, the casket story and the ring story from The Mercant of Venice. They were combined with other elements from Kabuki. I will show how Sakuradoki Zenino Yononaka is constructed through an analysis of the structure of the drama.
