Many students at the dental hygiene school cannot hold hand instruments properly in practical dental training. In order to study students' skill of finger motion, a relationship between pencil grips and pencil sharpening was analyzed. The subjects were 63 students of the day-time school and 109 students of the day-and-night-time school, in a total of 172 students. Regarding pencil grips, 96 students (55.8%) held pencils properly, and 76 (44.2%) improperly. In improper grips, "the second finger overlapping the first" was found most frequently, in 45 students (26.1%), and "the first finger overlapping the second" was found second-most frequently, in 14 students (8.1%). Pencil sharpening training, using cutter knives manufactured by Olfa and hexagonal pencils, had been carried out for a year. The skill of pencil sharpening was evaluated in April, June, November and next year's January, in a total of four times. The evaluation criteria were Group A (perfect ; 100 points), Group B (excellent ; 90 points), Group B' (almost excellent ; 80 points), Group C (good ; 60 points), Group D (poor ; 40 pooints) and Group E (bad ; 20 points). Students with proper pencil grips scored 50.4 points at the first evaluation time, 63.9 points at the second time, 54.9 points at the third time and 68.4 points at the final time. Students with improper pencil grips scored 48.4 points at the first evaluation time, 61.8 points at the second time, 52.5 points at the third time and 66.7 points at the final. This result showed students with proper grips scored higher points than students with improper grips in all of four evaluation times. However, both of students with proper grips and students with improper grips scored higher points as the training of pencil sharpening progressed.
