Theoretical and experimental studies on second-harmonic generation of a picosecond laser pulse with time predelay are described at intensities of upto 200 GW/cm^2. The theoretical results showed that the pulse compression from 1.0 ps fundamental pulse to 0.1 ps second-harmonic pulse can be obtained at the optimum fundamental intensity of 50 GW/cm^2 and the KDP crystal thickness of 0.91cm. In the experiment, the pulse compression from 1.5 ps fundamental pulse to 0.63 ps second-harmonic pulse was observed with a 0.6 ps temporal resolution streak camera. With the deconvolution of the experimental results to the temporal resolution of the streak camera, the shortest pulse duration may be 0.2 ps. The spatial profile of the second-harmonic pulse is not degraded by self-focusing at intensities of near 50 GW/cm^2.
