Attribute data are numerous and valuable in any organization. The x-R control chart for variables is used extensively to analyze variable data. The p chart for attribute data is however considered inefficient. The major reason being that unlike the x chart, there is no accompanying chart for the p chart to measure dispersion. The range of values is not reliable for a complementary chart as in the case of variable data. Potthoff and Whittinghill [1] proposed the V statistic as a measure of homogeneity for samples from a discrete distribution and p as an estimator of p if p is unknown. This paper presents the result of a simulation study to determine the suitability of using the p and V statistics to construct attribute control charts. The results from the investigation indicate that the statistics satisfy the requirements for use as control charts.
