The purpose of this paper is to identify the decision structure of travel behaviors involving two stops and to empirically examine how the temporal and spatial constraints are governing behavioral characteristics of two-stop chaining. In this study, the concept of prism constraint is introduced for offering a basic framework and spatial distribution of stop location is derived from the theoretical model. Next, an empirical analysis examines the effectiveness of the model structure and explores some characteristics through a practical application. The empirical results support the properties obtained from the theoretical model. Also, the analysis can conclude that time-space constraints exist and bind trip chaining behavior and that commuting distance is a principal determinant of the prism constraints.
