There has been also interesting recent work in the application of activity analysis to location theory more particulary in the area of regional planning and industrial location. At this point in time, however, conventional urban land-use planning is more vividly coloured by the artist's brush than the analyst's methodology. We attempt to reduce this kind of problem to a analytical form. This paper analyzes urban population distributions by programming or optimizing methods. We focus attention the minimization of work travel and used this as the objective function in the programming methods. There is a great deal of empirical evidence to support the contention that, subject to certain boundary conditions and constraints, proximity to work in the dominant factor influencing residential location.
