Various types of multilevel codes have recently been proposed by many researchers to increase the information rate in PCM systems. The proposed code structures were considerably complicated to decrease the DC component of pulse trains. The purpose of this paper is to facilitate the computation procedure of the power spectra of multilevel codes which have a complicated structure. The relation between the power spectra and the transit probability matrix of a given coded pulse trains is considered and a theorem is derived. Using this theorem, an algebraic computation method is proposed. The general formula of power spectra of multilevel balanced codes is derived and it is presented that the power spectra of various codes, such as bipolar code, PST code and those ever proposed, are obtained as a special case of the general formula. The algorism for automatic computation of power spectra is also presented.
