The concept of productive ageing is conceived as a key word to develop frontier of social gerontology. For promoting to understand the concept, we will have to go forward beyond a debate of components of productive ageing. Which is better for conceiving the productive ageing, relating to non-profit social activities or paid works? Which is better for conceiving it, including informal support or not? The idea of productive ageing will be grounded on data in three Japanese communities. Data were collected through interviewed questionnaire at Towa-cho, Yamaguchi prefecture (N=530), Toyohashi-shi, Aichi prefecture (N=524), and Mitaka-shi, Tokyo metropolis (N=474), granted by Japanese National Grant Program (Kosei-kagaku Kenkyu Hojokin). Towa-cho is known as the highest rate of sixty five and over years old population in Japan (47.4% at 1995). Though senior inhabitants in Towa-cho are dissolved toward empty nest family, they are still working, independent from their children, support emotionally within neighborhood, and participate religious/sociable activities. Toyohashi-shi is a industrialized local town. Senior inhabitants in Toyohashi-shi are uprooted from local community and individualized, but they maintain family tie. They enjoy sports, and traveling. Mitaka-shi is a suburban area in Tokyo Metropolitan area. Senior inhabitants in here are disengaged from job, and enjoy traveling. I will analyze components of productive aging, and consider the meanings of them.
