ABSTRACT : The purpose of this paper is to subject to assessment Gardner's Socio-Educational Model, the most influential theoretical framework in L 2 motivation research. Based on the model and data provided in Gardner et al.(1983), this study specifies paths to be integrated, which specifications are then communicated to a structural equation modeling program, LISREL-SIMPLIS. The scrutiny into validity of the reproduced model and functionality of independent parameter estimates is partially indicative of some misfit between Socio-Educational Model and input data, in accordance with state of the art criteria for evaluation. Exemplified in this paper is that replicating the test of extant models and determining the plausibility of the models merit intensive consideration, which are, however, often challenged by dearth of sufficient data in published papers and researchers' expertise imperative for the model assessment. Addressing the cause for concern in balancing ubiquitous application of advanced statistics in second language acquisition research and acquiescent credibility directed to such number-based interpretations, quantitative research-oriented professionals are advised to exercise more caution in employing statistical data analysis and presenting numerical outcomes as they are the ones better positioned to contextualize such findings and make them more instrumental for L 2 practitioners.
