In Song China, exile, one of the five punishments inherited from the Tang Code, was converted to blows on the back, Jizhang, with forced labor, Peiyi, by the legislation to mitigate penalties, Zhezhangfa. It has been argued by the students of punishments in Song China, however, that Peiyi was seldom or never practiced; the various degrees of penal registration, Bienpei, took over it. But, more recent study has pointed out that Peiyi was really put into practice based on the consideration of historical records and the discovery of historical evidences which prove its enforcement. In this paper, I attempt to second the later argument through the reexamination of historical sources on which the conventional wisdom was based, the investigation of the articles for Peiyi in the Southern Song period, and the discovery of new historical evidences which show the real practice. The table of contents is as follows : Introduction 1. The Reexamination of the Argument that Peiyi was not practiced 2. The Articles for Peiyi in Qingyuantiaofashilei 3. Histrical Evidences which prove the Practice of Peiyi Conclusion
